Protests in Zanjan began on September 21, 2022. People started gathering around the Saadi intersection at 6 pm which gradually spread to other parts of the city. After being attacked by the police forces, people fled the Saadi intersection and spread out to nearby streets.

As people gathered, other rallies/protests were being held in other neighbourhoods, such as the one taking place on Safa Street. This is where Seyed Mehdi Mousavi Niko was killed by the Islamic Republic police force. Seyed Mehdi Mousavi Nikou was shot five times by Regime forces shotguns who opened fire on the crowd. Even after he fell to the ground, Regime forces continued to shoot at his head and body. Mehdi was long dead before getting into the hospital.

As they have done in many other cases, the Islamic Republic refused to return Mehdi’s dead body to his family. His body was transferred from the hospital directly to the cemetery where he was buried by Regime forces. Only Mehdi’s immediate family were allowed to attend his burial.

Following this series of horrific events, the Islamic Regime told the family that Mehdi was killed by the Mojahedin Organization and Kurdish military groups. The Regime went further to threaten to arrest or kill his family should they tell anyone that Mehdi was actually killed by police forces during the protests. Seyed Mehdi Mousavi Niko, a young 16-year-old soul, was the son of Esmaeel.
